Washington DC is more than just memorials and sculptures. America’s capNEWSEUM.jpgital is an educational center. There is so much to see, visit and experience. There are places where you can learn about topics that are important worldwide. An example of this is the Newseum. A museum of news that is recognized for the excellent work they do.

Function and Purpose

This 250,000 square foot museum is located on a prominent spot in 16th street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW in DC. Because it is between the white house and the US capitol and adjacent to the Smithsonian museums, it attracts millions of visitors each year and all of them enjoy the experience fully. The building’s architect James Stewart Polshek did an excellent job in creating an architectural icon that surprises its visitors with its look and it’s easily remembered by any who sees it. On the outside it communicates the first amendment made to the constitution which includes freedom of religion, speech and press. All of this goes hand in hand to the museum’s goal and everything that happens inside the building.

Architecture, Construction, and Location

Being a museum of news its main function is to communicate current events and every day top headlines from around the world are displayed in this museum. Visitors are offered an interactive experience where they are presented with exhibits that collect five centuries of history in news. From pieces of the Berline Wall to the events of September 11, 2001. It also had 4D movie theaters which show films about world’s events that have marked history and exhibits of photographs and pictures that have caught unforgettable moments in history. It also serves as a memorial and honors the various journalists who have died doing their job: journalism. This interactive museum uses up-to-the- second technology to share the essence of journalism. It helps students and adults understand the importance of news and their impact on our daily life.

op headlines will soon become history that will help shape not only America but the world. Its goal, to help public media and news media understand each other better is reached every day. This museum holds inside it history in the making and many people go in not really understanding what the museum is really about but when they come out, they are marked. They realize how important every day headlines affect them and other people around the world. How history affects their present and how their present will affect their future. So the Newseum’s establishment was really worthy.

Review/ Reflection & Opinion

When I was told to research and do a report about the Newseum I thought it would be boring and I didn’t get that it was a museum of news. As I researched deeper I found this museum was really interesting and fun. It’s a very interactive and technological. Even its building looks technological and it gets the attention of many of its visitors. I’ve never heard of any museum like this before and its originality is what it makes it an unforgettable attraction. This museum has a variety of activities that makes this place anything but boring and once again I must remark the great way it uses technology to present and communicate information and it also shows how important technology has become for journalism. It’s original, educational and fun. It’s definitely not a museum you get to visit and experience every day and that’s what it makes a must see while in Washington.

Newseum

The Newseum was originally constructed in Rosslyn,
Virginia on April 18, 1997. It lived there until, in 2000, the Freedom Forum decided to move it across the Potomac River to its actual location. The Newseum is currently “located at the
newseum1.jpgintersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., on America’s Main Street between the White House and the U.S. Capitol and adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall.”(Newseum.org) It is worth noting that, costing 450 million US dollars, the current Newseum was not opened to the public until 2008.

The Newseum has a modern architecture. Consisting of a glass modern façade, accompanied by a 4 story tall stone panel to which 45 words of the 1st amendment are etched, the experience begins when one first sees the building in its natural splendor. The Newseum is held in an 250,000 square foot area and has seven floors, all dedicated to fulfill the museum’s mission:

...To “educate the public about the value of a free press in a free society and tells the stories of the

world's important events in unique and engaging ways.”

Anyhow, recalling from personal experience, I shall acknowledge that, in this museum. my attention was drawn by various artifacts. For instance, having the Berlin wall no more than a few centimeters away from me, really impacted me. It is worth noting that, beside the Berlin wall, stood a really tall concrete tower. This tower was used in East Germany to prevent Germans from escaping to the West side.

Another impressive site was the Pulitzer room. In this room a truly touching photo gallery lies. This amazing photo gallery contains all the Pulitzer prize winning photograph from all the years. I shall recognize that the experience of looking to every singular and unique photograph, really causes an impression in oneself: it is as if each picture depicts a different story in a different setting.

Finally, I would say that having the very highest antenna of one of the Twin Towers in front of me was a really interesting experience. Being all corroded and distorted, the metal structure really had a modern-abstract sculpture appearance. Just by seeing such an artifact, I was able to transport all the way back to 9/11.

Till this day, I believe he Newseum has done an extraordinary labour in performing its mission. In other words, its function is to serve the audience as a place where they can learn about the value of the press in Washington D. C.’s most interactive museum. My thinking is due to the fact that, during the time I was inside this museum, I did not only learned various facts, but more importantly, I was able to transport myself to periods and events which are truly important in history. In fact, I actually got to treasure the importance of a free press in a free society!

The Washington D.C. Newseum is about 250000 square foot, it is a huge place and full of information.it offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of history, shown in exhibitions, technology, programs, and texts.external image 2008_0410_newseum.jpg
It is located in Pennsylvania Avenue, Sixth Street of Washington D.C. in America’s Main Street. Found between the white house and U.S. capitol, near the national mall.it contains a unique exterior which has a cover of 74 foot high marble with the first amendment engravedin it. It also has a huge glass wall as representation for forum of media and public relationship.
The Newseum has seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services. Inside the Newseum, visitors explore the huge and informative world of news. They get to see how they are form, and their purpose in the society. It gives a unique opportunity to have another perspective as you read one instead of seeing it as only more paper with data. Newspaper is important because it is full of upgraded news that informs you about the present history and the things that are going around the world that you can’t know for yourself. The Senior Vice President Joe Urschel affirmed that "Visitors will come away with a better understanding of news and the important role it plays in all of our lives," and "The new Newseum is educational, inspirational and a whole lot of fun."
One of the Newseum’s biggest objectives is showing the importance of worlds events with creative and unique ways of writing to educate the people the value of the articles. This museum has more than 500 years back of historical information. There isn’t anything like this museum; it also contains very modern technology which helps the mind go beyond the knowledge, to the experience. The Newseum began with the essential idea of the freedom forum and later received additional support from individuals, corporations and foundations to become what it is now.
The freedom forum is a nonpartisan foundation that was established in 1991. It was dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people. The foundation focuses on three things: the Newseum, the First Amendment and newsroom diversity. The Freedom Forum is the main funder of the operations of the Newseum, an interactive museum of news in Washington, D.C.; the First Amendment Center; and the Diversity Institute.external image newseum_1.jpg
In my opinion, the Newseum was something totally unexpected and incredibly valuable for the information it contains about the world’s past. I hope I get to visit it again another day to revive that unexplained experience I had. It was great and the only thing I regret was that I wasn’t enough time in there, to enjoy its full potential. I want to learn more about its significance and go deeper to what people point of view was, long time before. It is an experience that should be repeated for next generations because things like this museum are not seen often.map_Newseum.gif
